‘T.I.A’ by Serkan Günes
Exhibition September 2025 – January 2026
Serkan Günes (b.1980) grew up in Istanbul. At the age of 20, he moved to Stockholm, Sweden. Two years later, he received a camera as a birthday gift, and that’s when his journey in photography started. Today he resides on the shore of Lake Keskijärvi, 100 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with how you see them.
On my first trip to Africa I felt like coming home, although I have never been there before. I was captivated by the light and as my travel companion Robert Eliasson foreworn, I was “struck by the African bug” on the plane trip back home to Sweden. Since then, I’ve returned thirteen times to the African continent, the cradle of humanity. What sets this wilderness apart is light: the atmospheric glow of the African landscape. From dusk to dawn, the landscape shifts. In shades of green, scarlet, violet and blues by the rays escaping from behind the horizon, Serkan cherish the most.
Serkan Günes is one of the most gifted and exciting photographers in Europe today. He possesses a sharp ’eye’ and has a keen and deep understanding of the values and nuances of light. In combination with his compositions and his appreciation of new cutting edge technology, he has helped to revitalise traditional landscape photography in a time when our world has gone grey-fuzzy, blurry and bloodletting. He has managed to put back some colours into this world. And that is the hallmark of novelty. In 2006, Serkan Günes won the prestigious Eric Hosking Award in the category Best Portfolio. organised by BBC Wildlife Magazine in collaboration with the Natural History Museum in London. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has named Serkan Günes Nature Photographer of the Year 2009. He has exhibited and published in Scandinavia, Turkey, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Japan. There are also three books published with Serkan’s photographs. Stockholm -Sjön, skogen & skärgarden (2011) I huvudet pả Fotografen -guide till landskapsfotografier (2013) in collaboration with Göran Segeholm. The land of Eight Seasons (2017).
